Being near the end of the Mornington Peninsula, Sorrento is almost surrounded by water, and the water has a moderating affect on the local temperature.  This can be shown by comparing records of measurements of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology taken from nearby Portsea with measurements taken from inner Melbourne suburb of Burnley, as both sets of records were taken from a similar period of time.

The measurement data is BOM copyright, so click here for the Portsea data and here for the Burnley data if you would like to see the actual values.

Comparison of the two sets of numbers show that the maximum temperature in Summer near Sorrento is 3.6 degrees cooler than at Burnley, and the minimum temperatures in from April to to August are an average of 1.9 degrees warmer!
