Sorrento is in a unique position for the whole region, around 90 minutes drive from Melbourne, on a thin stretch of the peninsula, where the bay beach is walking distance to the ocean beach. If you are visiting Australia for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, then Click Here for special information. Over 200 years ago, on the morning of October 9, 1803, an officer under Col. David Collins on board the Calcutta described the land now known as Sorrento as 'exquisite scenery' and 'beautifully picturesque'. Later in that Century, Mr. George Seth Coppin established Sorrento as a tourist destination, and built a prominent holiday house on the Sorrento foreshore on the corner of Point Nepean Road and what is now known as Coppin Road. Number 39 Coppin Road is available for you to rent, at the top of a hill, on that same road.
