| History in
Sorrento around the 1870s:
Mr.
George Coppin was the entrepreneur who put Sorrento on the map, making
it a key tourist destination from the 1870s onwards. Tourists
would travel by steam ferry from Melbourne to enjoy the distinctive
scenery of Sorrento.
Mr. Coppin was responsible for building the Continental
Hotel and the Anchorage, being his holiday house, both in the 1870s,
both with fine bay views.
